Oh Iggy….forever my #WCW LOL. In case you don’t know, this is Iggy Azalea, recording artist born and raised in Australia. Before we get into a lot of detail, let’s find out where she got her name shall we? Names come from many different places, experiences, and nicknames, and I find it very interesting how we, as artists, decide on our stage names. Iggy got her name from two places. “Iggy’ comes from her childhood dog, and ‘Azalea’ comes from the street where she grew up, and where her family lives now.
According to Wiki, she relocated to the U.S. at a young age and since pursued her musical career. She gained attention with on-the-edge music videos and songs like “Pu**y“. While releasing tracks and a mixtape (Ignorant Art), she became the first female, non-American rapper to be on the Top 10 Freshman issue of XXL Magazine.
Coming to America on a “vacation”, she told her family she wouldn’t be coming home, instead, she would stay to per sue music and her love on hip hop; she made the move when she was just about to turn 16. After traveling the U.S., making connections, and being managed by different labels, she finally found where she fit and signed with Island Def Jam records to release her debut album, The New Classic.
Featured on her debut album are the singles “Bounce“, “Change Your Life“, and “Fancy“. Her single “Fancy” has been getting a lot of attention and commercial radio play, with good reason. It showcases her style, skill and ability, and her career as a whole is a testament of her hunger to succeed.
Iggy’s debut album The New Classic was released this past week, April 22, 2014, so if you haven’t yet, go out and get it! In the mean time, check out the music video to her single, “Fancy”.
